Suchana Seth, a 39-year-old artificial intelligence expert and founder of Mindful AI Lab, a Bengaluru-based startup, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her four-year-old son at a service apartment in Goa. She was caught by the police in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district while trying to flee to Bengaluru with her son’s body stuffed in a bag.

According to the police, Seth checked into a luxury apartment in Candolim, North Goa, on Saturday with her son and checked out on Monday morning. The staff of the apartment noticed some bloodstains in the room and alerted the police, who reviewed the CCTV footage and found that Seth had left the hotel without her son and was carrying a bag.

The police contacted the cab driver who had taken Seth to Bengaluru and spoke to her over the phone, enquiring about her son. Seth gave evasive and suspicious answers and claimed her son was with a friend in Goa. The police asked the driver to take the cab to the nearest police station in Karnataka, where they found the body of the boy in her bag and detained her.

The police suspect that Seth killed her son by smothering him and using a sharp object. They said the motive behind the murder is yet to be established, but preliminary interrogation revealed that Seth had an estranged relationship with her husband, who is currently in Indonesia, and they were fighting for the custody of the child. Seth had also filed a case in a Bengaluru court, seeking Rs 2.5 lakh per month as child support from her husband, who earns Rs 9 lakh per month.

Seth is an artificial intelligence ethics expert with 12 years of experience working in data science and the startup industry. She was on the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics List, and was a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Centre at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. Her LinkedIn profile states that her company, Mindful AI Lab, is a “social impact venture that leverages AI to create a more equitable and inclusive world”.

The police have booked Seth for murder and are conducting further investigation. They have also asked her husband to come to Goa and cooperate with the probe.
